We live in a world today where not only do we have to educate our children to put their best foot forward we have to teach them about race relations. I remember growing up in a time where my family and extended family believed in the village concept. We were taught to respect ourselves, our elders, and adults.

We have gotten so far removed from the village concept that we no longer have the foundation and structure for the next generation. Long gone are the days of parenting other children to ensure that the neighborhood kids all grew up with the same values. Parents must be sure their children are getting the proper education both in and out of school. Making sure Black and Brown children learn about people of importance from our past that look like them. Inventors, Doctors, Educators, Entertainers, Athletes and Entrepreneurs who have pushed the culture forward and made waves globally.

We must move beyond Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X. There is an endless list of people of color who created the algorithm for Google, who created the ability to change cartridges for video games, who worked for NASA, who created the 1st MP3 and the list goes on and on. Educating them to have pride in themselves and encourage them to dream! School is not enough. It is time for the village to reinvent itself and rebuild the foundation, holding itself accountable for our future leaders of color. The time is now to invest in the village.
